All staff undergoing training will be expected to keep a learning log for the purposes of appraisals, professional development or revalidation. Reflective learning is important for safeguarding children, young people and adults for the following reasons:

  • Safeguarding children and adults often involves exercising professional judgement

  • Our professional responses are informed by our experiences, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and values

  • Exercising professional judgement may generate conflict with the family, other professionals or other agencies

  • The knowledge and evidence base for safeguarding is constantly evolving

  • Child protection and adult safeguarding work is emotive and can generate strong feelings which can influence the way you and others act

  • Evidence of reflective practice, peer review, shared learning and supervision can help safeguard children, young people and adults
